COMPOSITION 23/24: TO, FOR, ABOUT, WITH HER
DID YOU CALL THESE CLOTHES?
This body of work brings together a collection of stories, research and studies of heritage from a semiotic view point. The collection draws from themes of the female form and explorations of the artistry of African design conveyed through yarns, motifs and colour.
In the words of the collection’s designer Chukwuma; drawing and painting via these textiles and garments offers the power to communicate in such a way that is more potent than speaking. These garments, though silent, speak to you as you stare at them and as they are set in the motion art of wearing. The works show a vibrancy of textile mastery, as outcomes of refined techniques of production such as weaving, appliques, dyeing, and knitwear made by tenacious hands across Africa.
From stories of African history, personal expressions of experiences, tradition, natural phenomena to the immediacy of current world realities, this collection takes you through a poetic awakening that leaves you with the question, are these just garments?
